I saw Sully when it first came out, and my rewatch was exactly as I remembered it. It’s a very well-executed film whose runtime does not overstay its welcome. I consider it to be one of Eastwood’s best directorial efforts. It’s a very maturely made film. It doesn’t try to be sensational or exceedingly glorifying, even though its subject matter could lend itself to that.
Watching characters like Sully is very fascinating to me. When he says, “It’s been my life. My whole life,” I feel that he and I are on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to how defining your career is to the story of your life. I want to understand what drives a man like that, and Sully as a character is a great proxy for that.
This brings me to Tom Hanks, who plays Sully in a performance that is muted in the best way possible. Is it possible for an actor like him, with six Oscar nominations and two wins, to be underrated? I think he is, if you consider his career in the 2000s. The rest of the cast I found uneven, with the exception of Aaron Eckhart, who should really consider donning that mustache full-time.
My rating: 8/10.
